Mattia Binotto resigns as Ferrari boss: bad for Carlos Sainz?

The Scuderia Ferrari It has not even waited for 2023 to make one of the most important and demanded changes for months. Mattia Binotto, who until now was the head of the team, has submitted his resignation.

The great architect of the signing of Carlos Sainz by the Maranello team has made the decision, officially, now, although it has been considering the decision for weeks now. It will become effective on December 31.as stated by the team in the statement.

Binotto leaves Ferrari after almost three decades in the Italian squad, where he first arrived as an engineer and gradually climbed up to take the reins of the sports structure in January 2019 instead of Maurice Arrivabene.

“With the pain that this entails, I have decided to end my collaboration with Ferrari. I am leaving a company that I love, of which I have been a part for 28 years, with the serenity that comes from the conviction that I have done my best to achieve the objectives set”, says a Binotto who has laid the foundations of a project on the rise and who, despite his many failures, has once again been a candidate after several years in ostracism.

The news comes just 12 hours after the block resignation of the Juventus Turin Board of Directors, which shares ownership with Ferrari.

«I leave a united and growing team. A strong team, ready, I am sure, to achieve the highest goals, to which I wish all the best for the future. I think it is right to take this step at this time as hard as this decision has been for me. I want to thank all the people from Gestione Sportiva who have shared this path with me, made of difficulties but also of great satisfaction”, concludes the former head of the Scuderia.

Vasseur, the great favorite

Although the team has not yet confirmed it, the big favorite to take over from January 1 is Frederic Vasseur. The until now director of Alfa Romeo Sauber is considered one of the most respected team leaders in the paddock, not only because of his experience in his current work but also with Renault (today Alpine) in 2016.

It remains to be seen how his arrival can affect the ‘status quo’ of the two pilots. Charles Leclerc has been, until now, the number 1 of the structure, with Carlos Sainz as second. Without Binotto, who was the great defender of the Spaniard at Ferrari, it will be necessary to see if that difference in role is shortened or, on the contrary, it is further distanced.
