KaVontae Turpin could have a big impact in Dallas after the week

There’s no question that KaVontae Turpin has been one of Dallas’ best additions this year. After being crowned USFL MVP this year, the wide receiver came to the Cowboys to become their punt and kick return specialist. And so he has shown since his great performance against the Chargers during the preseason.

Now, the coaching staff may involve Turpin more on offense after the bye week. This is how Mike McCarthy, head coach of the Cowboys, let him see it during his show for the official YouTube channel of the cowboy team.

“It’s time for Turpin, we have to continue to find form to make him part of the offense, give him some opportunities”McCarthy said of Turpin on Friday. en The Mike McCarthy Show. “He is getting better every week. I like the growth in our young players.”

As planned at the start of the season, KaVontae Turpin has played mostly as a kickoff and punt receiver on Dallas’ special teams. And although he has yet to return for a touchdown, he has good records in that section: 13 punt returns for 191 yards (longest 52 yards), apart from nine punt returns for 218 yards (longest 63 yards). .

Still, the Cowboys’ coaching staff wants to take advantage of Turpin’s explosiveness and quickness on offense. So far, the USFL MVP has carried just three carries for 17 yards. However, he may have more of a hand in the cowboy attack in the coming weeks. This, it is worth mentioning, due to how limited the receiving staff is after the loss of Simi Fehoko and the almost zero impact of rookie Jalen Tolbert.

Turpin can be key against Green Bay in week 10

Although Turpin could be involved more in the Kellen Moore-led offense after the bye week, he could also have a bigger impact on special teams. In fact, the receiver is expected to finally get his first official return for a touchdown, this after posting two in the preseason against the Chargers.

And looking at Green Bay’s special teams performance, that first Turpin scoring return could come in Week 10.

So far this regular season, one of the Packers’ weaknesses has been punts or punts. Their punter, Pat O’Donnell, has been the most pressured in the NFL in the last five seasons with 23.5% pressure. In fact, he already had a blocked punt last month.

On the other hand, Green Bay’s punt coverage team has allowed an average of 10.8 yards per return, seventh worst in the league at that point. Seeing as Turpin is averaging 14.7 yards per punt return, this could be a serious problem for Dallas’ next opponent.

Added to this, Green Bay is one of only two teams that have allowed a punt block so far this season. The Packers’ only block came in Week 5 against the Jets, and the play ended in a touchdown return. Meanwhile, the Rams have allowed two blocks so far … and one of those came against the Cowboys, also in Week 5.

As we can see, the Packers’ punts could be ideal for KaVontae Turpin to get his first official NFL touchdown. However, the young receiver is expected to play an important role in the offensive game for the remainder of the season as well. To go far this year, the Cowboys must make the most of their offensive weapons. And, without a doubt, Turpin can be one of them.
