Jokowi Asks Erick Thohir to Prepare IKN Nomination to Host the 2036 Olympics

TEMPO.CO, Nusa Dua – President Joko Widodo alias Jokowi has ordered the Minister of State-Owned Enterprises or BUMN Erick Thohir to bridge discussions with the International Olympic Committee (IOC). The discussion mainly discussed the candidacy of the Archipelago Capital City (IKN), East Kalimantan, as the host of the Olympics in 2036.

The request to Erick was made after President Jokowi delivered a statement regarding the candidacy to host the Olympics.

“He contacted me and ordered to bridge the discussion with the IOC regarding the readiness for this candidacy,” said Erick, Wednesday evening, November 16, 2022. This was stated during a virtual press conference from Bali.

Erick Thohir stated that the Indonesian government is very serious about nominating IKN to host the Olympics which will be held in the next 14 years.

Furthermore, Erick claims that Indonesia has proven successful in holding a number of international activities. The most recent major event held, for example, was a series of G20 Presidency meetings over the past year.

He hoped that the IKN’s nomination as host for the 2036 Olympics could be one of the series to welcome the centenary of Indonesia’s independence in 2045.

While quoting IOC President Thomas Bach’s statement that sport can also create world peace, said Erick, organizing this big celebration also aims to create peace.

This, according to him, is in line with the Indonesian philosophy of unity in diversity. “Through this sport is one of the steps for peace that we can do,” he said.

Therefore, Erick really hopes that the government will also take this nomination step very seriously. “Hopefully we can get support from IOC members.”

Meanwhile, the Minister of Youth and Sports Zainudin Amali said that Indonesia actually submitted a bid to host the 2032 Olympics. Unfortunately, Indonesia lost quickly to Australia, which nominated Brisbane.

“So if asked how serious it is, yes we are very serious and experienced in hosting multi-branch sports events such as the 2018 Asian Games,” said Amali.
