Important Rules of Hockey

Whether you play ice hockey, field hockey or skater hockey, there are some important rules that you should know about before heading to the rink. These rules include penalties and rink bandy.

Ice hockey

Developed in eastern Canada during the mid-1800s, modern ice hockey is a team sport. Teams of eighteen players compete on a rectangular rink that measures about 85 feet wide by 61 feet long.

Ice hockey is played in three 20-minute periods. A center ice dot marks the start of play for each period. The goal of the game is to score more goals than the opposing team. Each team has a goaltender and five skaters. A standard hockey puck is three inches in diameter and weighs 5.5 to 6 ounces.

Field hockey

Traditionally, field hockey is played by men, although it’s become more popular amongst women. It’s one of the oldest college sports in the U.S. and is also played at the high school level.

The game consists of eleven players on the field, with each team defending a 23m square in the middle. The goal is to drive a plastic ball into the opposing team’s goal with a stick. Goalkeepers wear typical field hockey goalkeeper gear, including a helmet.

Skater hockey

Originally played in summers, skater hockey has grown to become a competitive sport. It is played with four skaters per team and uses the same protective equipment as ice hockey.

The game is played on a rink divided into two halves. Each team has a goalkeeper and four skaters. The team that is closer to the opponent’s goal has a chance to score. The game lasts three 20-minute periods.

The ball used in skater hockey is a hard plastic ball. It is kept dry to protect the bearings.

Rink bandy

Originally, rink bandy was conceived as a way for bandy players to practice during the summer. Since then, it has evolved to be a sport for recreational play. Today, it is the second-most popular winter sport, behind ice hockey. It is also recognized by the International Olympic Committee.

Rink bandy originated in Sweden in the 1960s, with players using ice hockey sticks. The sport combines aspects of bandy, field hockey and ice hockey. It is governed by the Federation of International Bandy. The goal of rink bandy is to score by hitting an opposing player’s goal with the bandy ball.

Penalties

Depending on the severity of the infraction, officials can award a number of different types of penalties. A player who hits another player with a shaft of his stick, for example, is subject to a major penalty, while a player who checks a player’s head with his stick isn’t.

The game of hockey is fast and physical. It’s important that everyone on the ice plays by the rules. For instance, you don’t want to interfere with a player who is trying to skate by.
