Ieuan Evans elected Welsh FA president amid turmoil

The XV of Wales is in the midst of a sporting crisis.

Former international Ieuan Evans was elected president of the Welsh Rugby Federation (WRU) on Monday as the Leek XV is going through a delicate phase less than a year from the next World Cup in France.

«The central mission of the Welsh Rugby Union is to ensure sustainability and success through our game, and that will be my mantra in the days, weeks, months and years to come.“, he promised, quoted in a press release from the WRU.

The former three-quarter wing, winner of the Five Nations Tournament in 1994, third in the first World Cup in 1987, arrives at the presidency of Welsh rugby in full doubt.

Current coach Wayne Pivac is at the center of discussions. Because the humiliating defeat against Georgia 13-12 ten days ago at home had the effect of a shock, as the loss last Saturday against the Australians (39-34 while the Welsh led 34-13) extended. Under the direction of Pivac, the XV of Wales is in 20 defeats out of 34 matches.

«If we stand still, we will retreat,” pointed out Evans. “We have to listen, we have to make changes where necessary and we have to keep fighting to be stronger than the sum of our individualities.“, he added.

Evans is considered one of Wales’ best wingers, having scored 33 tries in his eleven-year international career. He also played in the selections of the British and Irish Lions.
