How to Get Involved in Ice Hockey

ice hockey

Whether you are interested in ice hockey or not, there are a number of ways that you can get involved. For example, there are Minor leagues, Intercollegiate leagues and the NHL.

NHL

Among the four major professional sports leagues in the United States, the National Hockey League is considered to be the top professional ice hockey league in the world. It is made up of 32 teams and includes teams from the United States and Canada. The Stanley Cup is awarded annually to the league playoff champion.

The NHL is a multi-national operation and has added teams in cities like Las Vegas and desert cities like Phoenix. The league has added nine teams since the new millennium.

The league was founded in 1917 and has grown to 30 active franchises. A hockey game usually consists of five players and one goaltender. The team with the puck starts an offensive attack and attempts to score a goal. The team without the puck tries to steal passes or block shots.

Minor leagues

Several national bodies govern minor leagues in ice hockey. In some cases, minor league teams are located in the same area as their NHL team, while other teams play in different countries. In addition, there are several regional minor leagues in the United States and Canada.

Among the North American minor leagues, the American Hockey League (AHL) is the most prominent. It is the main development league for NHL teams, and has teams in Canada and the USA. It is a highly competitive league that draws a lot of talent from the region. It is considered the highest minor league in North America.

There are other leagues at the lower levels, such as the Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL). This league is based in the midwest and south and has 11 teams. However, it is not one of the most competitive minor leagues.

Intercollegiate

During the early 1900s, a few colleges in the midwest began to offer ice hockey. Some colleges even started to build ice rinks on campus. Others chose to simply buy ice time from local rink operators.

In 1923, Princeton University built its first rink on campus. During the Great Depression, many colleges decided that it wasn’t worth the expense of building their own. In fact, Cornell didn’t build a rink until after World War II.

The first major development in college ice hockey came in 1920, when the Middle Atlantic Conference (MAC) was formed. It was the first lower-tier competition in collegiate hockey. Every member of the conference was automatically eligible for the MAC tournament. The winning team would advance to the NCAA tournament.

The MAC isn’t exactly a conference, it’s a league. The league sponsors men’s ice hockey and women’s ice hockey. It also hosts the national championship for its NAIA division programs.
