As the Paris 2024 Olympic Games approach, Melty explains how the different Olympic sports are chosen.

In Paris, during the 2024 Olympic Games, 32 different sports will be on the program. But how are they chosen? It is, in fact, very simple. The International Olympic Committee, also known as the IOC, has set up a list of 28 sports, known as “holders”. These sports are therefore present during each Summer Olympiad. Here is the list:

Athletics, rowing, badminton, basketball, 3×3 basketball, boxing, canoeing, track cycling, road cycling, BMX freestyle, BMX racing, mountain biking, fencing, soccer, golf, artistic gymnastics, rhythmic gymnastics, trampoline, weightlifting, handball , hockey, judo, wrestling, modern pentathlon, rugby, swimming, artistic swimming, marathon swimming, diving, water polo, equestrian sports, taekwondo, tennis, table tennis, shooting, archery, triathlon, sailing, volleyball, beach volleyball.

To these 28 sports, the IOC has decided, for these 2024 Paris Olympic Games, to add four so-called “additional” sports. Already present in Tokyo, climbing, skateboarding and surfing will be back in the capital. The fourth is a new kid on the block: breakdance. Indeed, for the very first time, the best breakdancers will compete at the Place de la Concorde in Paris in various events after which one and an Olympic breakdancer will be elected.

Olympic sports: specificities in certain sports

At the Olympic Games, some sports have specific characteristics. This is particularly the case of rugby which, during the Olympic Games, is played at 7 and not at 15 as is more traditionally the case. On the football side, it is a competition reserved (or almost) for players under 23 years old. Indeed, each team is only entitled to three players who have exceeded this bar in its workforce.
