Gold and silver for Jacobo Fernández in Mexico

Jacobo Fernández from Vigo won gold and silver in the first Ibero-American badminton tournament that was held this week in the Mexican city of Guadalajara. As part of a tour carried out by the Spanish team in America, the athlete from Olive won two medals, both in doubles disciplines.

The victory came in the men’s couples event. Together with Rubén García from Granada, the Cíes Badminton player won the victory by beating the Peruvians José Guevara and Diego Mini 21-18 and 21-15. The title also comes in the first year in the senior category of both athletes. For this reason, they are located in low positions in the world ranking, so these victories will allow them to move up a few positions in the list.

In addition to the victory, in mixed doubles, Jacobo Fernández took the silver. On this occasion he teamed up with Paula López from Madrid and faced off in the match for the title with the Mexican duo made up of Armando Montoya and Miriam Rodríguez. The Spanish dominated the first set to take the lead (21-17). However, the locals, who had the support of the public, knew how to stay in the game and react. The second set fell to their side 17-21 and the third turned into a succession of alternatives until the final 18-21.
