Former Sporting player Fernando Gomes dies at 66

Football mourns the death of Fernando Gomes, a Portuguese football idol and former Sporting player, at the age of 66. The Portuguese had been fighting pancreatic cancer for some time and in October he had suffered a stroke, according to Portuguese media reports. He was admitted to a Porto hospital. In Gijón his talent ended up diminished by injuries during the two years he dressed as rojiblanco, between 1980 and 1982.

His was a flashy signing and a difficult challenge, to make Quini forget, who had just joined Barcelona. His time at Sporting ended up being remembered for the famous phrase “mister non podo”, with which he repeatedly addressed Vicente Miera because his physical problems prevented him from playing. He returned to Porto after playing for the Gijón team, a stage in which he recovered his best level and became a golden boot.
