Croatia swirls into the lead in group Belgium, Canada is out despite historic goal | 2022 FIFA World Cup

After Qatar, Canada is the second country to be mathematically eliminated from this World Cup. A lightning-fast, historic goal by Alphonso Davies made the Canadians dream of a stunt, but World Cup finalist Croatia convincingly put it right. Croatia needs a draw in the final match against Belgium to advance.

Croatia-Canada in a nutshell:

  • Key moment: After 1 minute and 8 seconds, the ball was already in the Croatian goal. The fastest goal at this World Cup was not the start of a new Canadian shining performance.
  • Man of the Match: With two assists and countless great actions, we put the most feathers on the hat of Ivan Perisic.
  • Remarkable: It is often said about the Belgians that they are (too?) old, but what should we think of 37-year-old Luka Modric? As a young foal he led his team to victory today.
  • And now? The Red Devils still have their fate in their own hands. With a win against Croatia, they always advance to the eighth finals on Thursday.

Canada collapses after blitz start

After not getting what they deserved against the Belgians, the Canadians clearly intended to pick up something against vice world champions Croatia.

They started the game scorchingly and in the second minute Davies headed Buchanan’s excellent cross past Livakovic into goal. It is Canada’s first-ever World Cup goal.

Canada’s blitz start was not continued and Croatia’s class gradually took over. After half an hour, Kramaric’s equalizer was rightly rejected for offside, but five minutes later he had his goal.

The striker was somewhat forgotten in the sixteen and took advantage of the space to pop in nicely across the corner. Just before the break, the Croats even completely corrected the lopsided situation. Livaja found the hole next to Borjan with a nice low shot.

Croatia is not in trouble after the break

After the break, the Canadians fell further away. Where the Belgians had so many problems with the North Americans, the Croats easily played Canada in a pile.

Modric, Perisic and Kovacic dominated midfield without any problems and Kramaric did his thing up front. At first he failed incomprehensibly from close range, but with his second of the evening – a nice place ball – he hit the Canadians against the canvas twenty minutes before the end.

The cups then went down at Canada and in added time, substitute Majer made it 4-1 after Miller’s mistakes in defense.

Three points added for Croatia, which needs a draw against the Red Devils on Wednesday to certainly advance to the next round. In any case, the Belgians are facing a difficult match against the vice world champion.

National coach Canada: “We are proud and we want to beat Morocco”

“Our game start was great,” said John Herdman, who immediately saw his Canada score the 0-1.

“After the first two Croatian goals, we had to make adjustments and that created space. The Croatians have proven their qualities in the transition afterwards.”

“But I’m proud of my players. We showed 35 minutes that we can compete with the best players.”

“Tomorrow we will be disappointed, but we also scored a historic goal. And we want to win against Morocco. We want to show our country that we are on the right track for the 2026 World Cup.”

Croatian national coach: “Don’t go for a draw against Belgium”

His counterpart Zlatko Dalic thought his team had played “extraordinary”. “Croatia has shown its strength: I am proud.”

“We have taken a cliff, but a very good team awaits with Belgium. We are not going for a draw. We may not be influenced by euphoria after this victory.”

“This is the World Cup, then you don’t have easy matches. Belgium has to win, but we want that too. We have to put the same quality on the mat.”
