The Ecuadorian defender, involved in a scandal that reached the CAS, was finally not summoned by Gustavo Alfaro for the FIFA World Cup. “I’m still standing and firm against everything,” he said in a post.
Ecuador is preparing to play the World Cup in Qatar 2022. Gustavo Alfaro delivered the final list of 26 called for the competition, without Byron Castillo, the footballer who starred in a scandal that reached the TAS (and also kept Chile and Peru waiting) . Y, the next day, the player launched a strong post.
“Proud of you minors. I love you a world. We go with faith. I bet everything on you. My dream does not end here, I am still standing and firm against everything”expressed the defender in a post on his Instagram account.
“I love all this. If it wasn’t like that, my life would be (sic) very boring”he added. And he sentenced with a message of encouragement for all his teammates in the Ecuadorian team: “Let’s go to this, let’s go to this.”
Ecuador did not call Byron Castillo for the 2022 World Cup in Qatar due to “risk of new unfair sanctions”
The Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF) explained that Byron Castillo’s absence from the final squad for the Qatar 2022 World Cup is due to “risk of suffering unfair sanctions again”after the one imposed last week by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
In a statement, the FEF described the TAS ruling as “arbitrary” when considering “that ignores the most elementary legal principles universally accepted“, and announced his intention to exhaust all resources to “repair this unfair and painful situation, whatever the forum” in which he has to do it.
In view of the lawsuit filed by Chile and Peru, which requested the disqualification of Ecuador from the World Cup for the alleged improper alignment of Byron Castillo in eight matches of the World Cup qualifiers, the CAS confirmed that the footballer’s calls were valid.
Nevertheless, considered that his civil registration as an Ecuadorian and the obtaining of the consequent passport was carried out with false informationfor which the highest court of arbitration for sport sanctioned Ecuador with the loss of three points in the next Qualifiers for the 2026 World Cup.
“Incomprehensibly, the same TAS ruling – which recognizes the player’s eligibility – illegitimately sows a doubt regarding the content of his passport that could jeopardize not only the progress of the selection in this World Cup, but even jeopardizes his participation in the next edition”denounced the FEF.
The Federation reiterated that the TAS sanction has no legal basis and recalled that, given the suspicion that Byron Castillo was born in Colombia, “on four occasions Ecuadorian judges agreed with the player, the only competent authorities to settle this controversy” in Ecuador.
