Bundesliga: The desolate defense of BVB around Mats Hummels

Soccer Defeat in Gladbach

The desolate defense of BVB around Hummels and Schlotterbeck

Borussia Dortmund says goodbye to the World Cup break with two defeats. In Gladbach, the defense around Mats Hummels and the two World Cup players Niklas Süle and Nico Schlotterbeck were particularly disappointing. BVB trainer Edin Terzic finds clear words.

Gregor Kobel had had enough. The Dortmund goalkeeper roared his frustration and yelled at the people in front. Previously, once again a Gladbacher appeared free in front of him. Kobel, who was the best BVB professional at his Borussia in Mönchengladbach 4-2, defused the big chance. Like so many with the deserved defeat. Without the goalkeeper, who always reacted brilliantly, the game would have been a debacle for BVB.

BVB’s defense around central defenders Mats Hummels and Nico Schlotterbeck delivered an indisputable performance. Again and again, the Gladbachers broke through in the middle and appeared free in front of Kobel. At the first Gladbach goal after just four minutes, a pass into the interface was enough to overturn the defense. At the third goal, Hummels and Schlotterbeck had moved far too far.

“We allowed far too many chances to score. We had phases in which we defended very badly. The early goal in the second half pulled the plug on us. When you concede four goals, it’s just difficult to take something with you here,” said BVB coach Edin Terzic.

Dortmund shouldn’t have complained if they had conceded six or seven goals. After the 0:1 against Wolfsburg last Tuesday, there was now the 2:4 in Gladbach. “It was my own failure. Especially our work off the ball. We conceded too many goals that were too easy. At the beginning of the second half we sleep again. We made Gladbach strong,” said Julian Brandt.

BVB winters in sixth place in the table

Dortmund says goodbye to the World Cup break with two defeats and spends the winter in sixth place in the table, which is far too little for the club’s claims. “It’s a shitty feeling. You can’t change anything for two months now,” said Brandt.

“The week with the two defeats was very disappointing. Sixth place in the table isn’t our goal, that’s quite clear. We have to catch up again from January,” said Terzic.
