Arnold – who is now the first Wolfsburg player with 300 Bundesliga games – had expressed his incomprehension about the end of the World Cup on the club’s website before the game: “I am very, very disappointed. In terms of my performance, I can’t fault anything. I think I could have added value for the national team because I bring different skills and attributes with me.”

He shows that against Hoffenheim. Arnold hits the decisive cross before the 1:1 (own goal Kabak/45.+4), Baku sinks the 2:1 himself after a fine move (56./triggered by a great shot by keeper Koen Casteels). Hoffenheim took the lead with a header from Christoph Baumgartner (42′).

This also holds the Kashmir series of Wolfsburg coach Niko Kovac. Since he’s been wearing his lucky blue sweater, VfL has been unbeaten in nine competitive games – and has finally made contact with the European Cup places. Then comes the long World Cup break (VfL is now free until December 1st) in the middle of the successful run, actually unfavorable.

But: The Wolfsburg offensive in particular can now recover in peace by the end of January. Lukas Nmecha (partial tear of the patella tendon), Jonas Wind (muscular problems), Patrick Wimmer and Josip Brekalo (both ill) are missing against Hoffenheim, after twelve minutes Omar Marmoush also has to go with back problems.
