Belgium stumbles through the World Cup!
The 1-0 win over Canada was followed by a 2-0 loss to Morocco. The once golden Belgian generation continues to fall.
Superstar Kevin de Bruyne (31), who is playing his third World Cup, summed it up before the game: “We have a good team, but they are aging. I see us more as outsiders.” As against Canada, a squad of pensioners starts with an average age of 30.5 (!) years.
Ex-DFB kicker shocks Belgium and de Bruyne!
73 minutes: Abdelhamid Sabiri (30), who played five U21 games for Germany under Stefan Kuntz, scores from a direct free kick to make it 1-0. The ex-Paderborner, now at Sampdoria Genoa, fools goalkeeper Courtois in the near corner. ARD expert Marc Wilmots: “A goalkeeper mistake!”
Goal hero Sabiri was born in Morocco, came to Germany at the age of three and grew up in Frankfurt. Aboukhlal makes it 2-0 (90+2).
Belgium disappointing. With Meunier and Thorgan Hazard, coach Martínez brought two BVB stars from the start this time. Ex-Dortmunder Batshuayi storms in front again. All unsuccessful!
With around 25,000 fans behind them, Morocco and Bayern’s Mazraoui (fit in time after a hip injury) get their first win. The goal of national coach Regragui (47): “We want to make our country proud – no matter what way. The most important signal of this World Cup should be: Africa is progressing!” On Thursday the dream of reaching the round of 16 should come true against Canada.
