Ángel Correa’s revenge, from disappointment to opportunity at the Qatar 2022 World Cup: “I am enormously happy”

There is an axiom that goes around constantly that football, sooner or later, gives revenge. And at this time the one who must be remembering that phrase is Angel Correawho in just six days went from disappointment at being left out of the last cut in the list of the Argentine National Team for the Qatar 2022 World Cup to the opportunity that opened up before the emergency call due to the injury of Nicolás González.

Correa was there since Wednesday visiting his family in Rosarioas he had announced when he landed in Buenos Aires from Spain over the weekend, because the coach Lionel Scaloni he had listed him as one of four reservations asked not to go on vacation at the possibility of a change.

“It took me by surprise, I was enjoying it with my family, now I’m leaving with a huge illusion”was the first thing he said in public before arriving at Ezeiza, at the Islas Malvinas airport, where he boarded a private plane.

“They told me a couple of hours ago, I am enormously happy, an award for all the work I have been doing over the years, I am going to enjoy it to the fullest”, indicated the striker. “I spoke with Thiago (Almada) and he is very happy too,” he warned.

Before, Monday and Tuesday, he had trained with Thiago Almada -another of the reserved ones- and they even played together a chopped in the country where his representative Agustín Jiménez lives. “It’s flying, it has a barbaric rhythm”he told Clarion someone who could see him during those days of training.

On Sunday, upon arriving in Argentina, he had confessed that he felt “A huge sadness for not being able to participate in the World Cup”because he had “the illusion of participating”.

“I had the illusion of being able to participate. It was a very hard blow, but now a few days to rest with my family and my friends”affirmed the 27-year-old from Rosario at the Ezeiza airport, in statements to TyC Sports.

Angelitoowner of a life story with many nuances, will then meet his dream of playing in the World Cup in Qatar. As long as I’m here, I’m going as a bearer”he had confessed a few weeks ago.

But his bond with La Scaloneta had not slowed down, in fact his words -beyond the pain- had been without rancor. “I wish the boys and the entire coaching staff the best, who will undoubtedly give their lives to represent the country in the best way,” the striker stressed. And he completed: “We will be cheering until the end in each game”.

The fans’ favorite

His loss depended almost exclusively on the recovery of Paulo Dybalawho in the opinion of the coaching staff arrives well at the competition.

Correa made his debut with the National Team in August 2015, just turned 20 years old. He had previously won a title with the Juveniles, that same year, being a figure of the South American sub 20 that shone in Uruguay.

His tortuous childhood, full of deprivation and overcoming all kinds of difficulties, quickly made him one of the favorites of the Argentine fan, beyond the fact that it was in San Lorenzo where he made a name for himself in big football by winning, for example, the first Copa Libertadores in the club’s history, and from there it quickly escalated to Atlético de Madrid.

To the adversities that life gave him was added one that came from his own body: a heart condition that was detected in 2014 and forced him to undergo surgery.

This year he had to undergo surgery again to rearrange the prosthesis that was placed in that first intervention. He even kept quiet about his condition to be able to participate in the Finalissima against Italy.

“I am happy to tell you that everything went well. Thank you all for the messages of support, they helped me stay positive. Now it’s time to rest and recover to come back stronger,” the 2021 Copa América champion wrote that day with the Argentine team .

In total, Correa played 22 games for the Albiceleste and scored 3 goals. In the Scaloni cycle, although he was called up frequently, he failed to carve out a space in the starting eleven, in a team with quite marked starters from midfield forward.
