Excelsior hires Kik Pierie from Ajax for the rest of the season. The 22-year-old central defender played fifteen games this season for Jong Ajax in the Kitchen Champion Division.
Excelsior has brought in the desired left-footed defender with Pierie. “We already had Kik in mind this summer, but then he chose to stay with Ajax. Now he is still taking the step to us and we are very happy with that,” says technical manager Niels van Duinen on the Excelsior site .
Pierie immediately joins the current number fourteen of the Eredivisie. “I knew I wanted to take the next step in the winter,” the defender responds. “Then you look at which clubs are interested and at clubs that I can be interesting for. I quickly ended up at Excelsior.”
“Despite the fact that they do not have a large budget, they do everything they can to think in creative solutions. That mentality appeals to me. The club is very ambitious and I am too. I want to develop myself further and that is why it is this is a good match.”
Pierie: ‘I’m ready for the next step’
Pierie played for years in the Heerenveen youth academy, for which he made his debut in August 2017. Due to his good game at the Frisian club, he made the switch to Ajax for about 5 million euros in 2019, but he was unable to make an impression in Amsterdam.
The defender has never made his debut for Ajax’s main force. He has now played 37 matches for Jong Ajax. Pierie played two seasons on a rental basis for FC Twente from mid-2020.
“I am ready for the next step and that is showing myself again in the Eredivisie,” continues Pierie, who is still with Ajax until mid-2024. “Excelsior was immediately very enthusiastic and I immediately felt at home. That is why the choice was quickly made for me. I really want to play football here.”
