Adverse Wednesday in Santiago – Juventud Rebelde

This Wednesday was not a happy day for Cuban archery, since neither of its two teams qualified for the 2023 Pan American Games in Santiago de Chile, after falling prematurely in the continental qualifier that is hosted by these days precisely to the South American city.

The men’s cast, made up of Hugo Franco, Juan José Santiesteban and Javier Vega, managed to advance in their first match, after defeating the Dominican Republic 5-1, but they could not even resist Colombia in the next instance, falling by an overwhelming 6 -0 and be eliminated in the round of 16 phase. Keep in mind that the collective ticket was reserved in the contest for the four semifinalists.

The previous day, the first of the tournament, Franco from Pinar del Río had achieved a brilliant result, finishing third in the general classification and breaking the national record of 666 points that belonged to Juan Carlos Stevens, which he raised to 677. This was not the only record for the Island registered at the O’Higgins Military School, as Elizabeth Rodríguez also achieved something similar, surpassing with her 327 units in the first round, the current 326 of Maydenia Sarduy.

Precisely the girls were also in the round of 16 phase, when they succumbed 6-2 to Brazil. This was one of the strongest rivals that the squad made up of the aforementioned Elizabeth and Maydenia, as well as the new Yailín Paredes, could find on the road. Before, in the initial matchup, they had easily defeated Ecuador with a final score of 6-0.

In this way, both teams are left without options in the continental competition in Santiago and must seek their ticket to the Pan-American multi-sport event in the second qualifier, agreed, according to the head of Cuban archery coaches, for May next year at the venue still to be defined.

There are still days of competition and the priority now for the Creoles is to qualify for Santiago 2023 individually, with Hugo Franco and Elizabeth Rodríguez as the main contenders. The Chilean contest that will conclude on the 27th brings together athletes from 27 countries.
