West German championships for women and men in Herne

This Saturday, the qualified and seeded judoka in the age group women and men met in Herne. In a total of 14 weight classes, 98 male and 63 female judoka competed for tickets to the German Championships 2023 in Stuttgart.

Before the fighting started, there were two tributes. Peter Matthies was awarded the 3rd Dan and Panajotis Papadopoulos the 6th Dan by the presidents of the NWJV, Hans-Werner Krämer and NWDK, Wilfried Marx for their services in judo.

A small reception with many high-ranking guests also took place during the championships: On this memorable day 70 years ago, the NWJV, then known as the North Rhine-Westphalian Judo Ring, was founded. Many former presidents and vice-presidents had made their way to Herne and were thus able to be at a championship together again.

In addition, some of the winning teams of the past league season were honored by Angela Andree from the NWJV before the first award ceremonies.

The number of participants was similar to last year, but significantly lower than before the corona pandemic. In terms of sport, there were favorites victories, but also one or the other surprise. Soraya Günther, Sophie Püchel for women and Vincent Wienecke and Franz Haettich for men were able to defend their titles.
