Youth League: young Marseilles humiliated by Sporting

The Youth League days follow each other but are not alike for Olympique de Marseille. On September 13, the Phocaeans snatched a draw against the Germans from Frankfurt (2-2) thanks to a goal scored in the 7th minute of additional time by their… Belgian goalkeeper! Three weeks later Jelle Van Neck had to fetch the ball six times in his own net… OM U19s lost heavily at home (0-6) on Tuesday against Portugal’s Sporting during the 3rd day of the Youth League.

However, the youngsters from Marseille made a good start to the match, twice missing the opportunity to open the scoring. Benyahia misses the target when the goal was empty (18th) then a shot from Gebreyessus is saved on his line by a Portuguese defender (22nd). Four minutes later, it’s a cold shower with the opener from Ribeiro (0-1, 26th) for Sporting. And that’s just the beginning. The minots indeed concede six goals in… 33 minutes!

The expulsion of David Monteiro 20 minutes from the end calms the enthusiasm of the Portuguese. OM even miss an opportunity to save their honor but Gebreyessus’ penalty is pushed back by the Sporting goalkeeper on the post (77th).

The two teams will meet next Tuesday in Lisbon for the second leg. In the standings, Sporting, which has 7 units, leads group D with two lengths ahead of Frankfurt and four over the English of Tottenham. OM are at the bottom with only one point. Marseille’s chances of qualifying for the finals are now very small.
