Yellow Tigers avoid boasting after victory against the Netherlands: “Let us remain calm” | Volleyball World Cup

The top 12 was set as a goal in advance by the Yellow Tigers and the great victory against host country the Netherlands does not change that.

“That target still applies,” says captain Celine Van Gestel. “We have to prepare every game well and then we’ll see. We have to look at ourselves what can be done better. We want to show volleyball as beautifully as possible here.”

Marlies Janssens and Britt Herbots also do not allow themselves to be caught boasting. “I think we still have to look at it match by match,” says Janssens. “The opponents in the next group stage are not the least with China, Brazil and Japan. We have already shown great things against them in the past.”

Our man at the Volleyball World Cup, Marc Willems, tried to lure Herbots out of her room. Doesn’t she set the bar higher than the top 12? “Why should I do that? We have taken important points in this group. Let’s experience the next matches like against the Netherlands and then we’ll see.”

Then Gert Vande Broek was the most outspoken. “The top 12 is our goal, but we have also said that we will systematically raise the bar higher and higher,” said the national coach after the win against the Netherlands.

“But at a World Cup you live from match to match and the next match against Cameroon is also crucial. That is a realistic goal, but it is not the goal.”

“It’s not because we don’t express that greater purpose that we don’t cherish it within. But saying that objective now would be the dumbest thing we could do.”

Vande Broek’s plan therefore remains the same. “We are going to try to beat Cameroon on Sunday and then also try to win against the fourth of the other group. If that succeeds, the objective of that extra stunt will come closer. But let us remain calm for now.”

Watch the Yellow Tigers game against Cameroon live on Sporza on Sunday at 1 p.m.
