Tomas Berdych on the GOAT debate: That’s why Roger Federer is taller than Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic

“Maybe because this great era began with him,” the 37-year-old explained his decision at “iDnes” and put forward the thesis: “What he has done for tennis cannot be surpassed by any result.”

The 37-year-old added: “Those who want to compare the best by numbers will find arguments for different players.”

The number of Grand Slams may be the most objective benchmark, “but there are athletes who have left great marks,” said the former number four in the world.

With a haul of 20 Grand Slam titles, Federer ended his career as part of the Laver Cup, where he played his final match in doubles alongside long-time rival Nadal.

Berdych: Many followed tennis because of Federer

This makes the “Maestro” third in the ranking of most Grand Slam trophies behind Nadal (22) and Djokovic (21).

For the Czech, however, the GOAT debate is a clear matter. “A lot of people got upset because of him [Federer, Anm. d. Red.] Skills, watching tennis matches or starting to play,” stressed Berdych, adding. “That’s why he’s superior to the others.”
