Barcelona plans to release four of their senior players in the summer of next year. This was done to save the club’s expenses in the salary sector.
Reported ESPNThe four players are Sergio Busquets, Gerard Pique, Jordi Alba and Sergi Roberto. Busquets and Roberto’s contracts are until June 2023, while Pique and Alba are until June 2024.
With a few months remaining on the contract, releasing Busquets and Roberto was easier for Barcelona. But to ‘eject’ Pique and Alba, the conditions are more complicated.
Not only because of the longer contract duration, but also because Barcelona still owes the deferred salary to both. This condition is believed to have hindered Barcelona’s movement in the transfer market last summer.
Therefore, Barcelona are determined to sell Alba and Pique in the transfer market next summer. Alternatively, the management of the Catalan giants will try to negotiate to terminate their contract sooner than necessary.
The four names above, and also Frenkie de Jong, are indeed included in the list of the highest-paid players at Barcelona, as a result of the contracts signed during the leadership of Josep Maria Bartomeu. Management is currently trying to reduce the existing salary burden.

The departure of senior players will reduce the burden of salaries that are too large, so that Barcelona can rebuild the team with players who are needed but also cheap and not bothering the club’s finances.
“There are some wages that are worth more than the market price. It really hinders our movement in the transfer market. These players are difficult to transfer to other clubs, and damage financial fair play conditions. Our target is to eliminate the salary burden,” said Barcelona sporting director Mateu Alemany recently.
This season, only Busquets is still the main choice under Xavi Hernandez. Roberto and Alba still appear regularly, but not always a starter. While Pique has started to be excluded.
If all four are removed, then it will be the end of the journey of the old generation of La Masia that once led Barcelona to triumph in Europe and the world, and a new beginning for the younger generation like Gavi, Ansu Fati, and Eric Garcia.
