The losses, the cost of the squad, the layoffs, the spending on transfers… The keys to Oviedo’s accounts

Carso’s last attempt at Oviedo, last season, was at the gates of the play-off, but even further from the goal so often proclaimed: to achieve a self-sufficient club. The accounts made public by the entity reveal that last season (21/22) Oviedo generated losses of 2,033,070 euros, in line with the last decade. The balance has been possible due to “the implementation of various capital increases”, according to the report. Facing the current one, Pachuca projects some numbers with an attenuated deficit of 488,813 euros.

The numbers will be submitted for approval at the Ordinary and Extraordinary General Meeting, which will be held on November 16.

Post-covid improvements. Overcoming the health crisis allowed Oviedo to approach usual figures in key fields. In 21/22, the club entered 2.3 million in its membership campaign, when the previous one was 1.1 million. It also improved in income from competitions (box offices), with 43,202 euros or in sales (1.1 million, for the 861,000 euros of the previous year). In the official stores, the barrier of one million euros in sales was surpassed.

Low advertising. In turn, there is a significant loss of income from advertising, which in 20/21 was almost 4 million and last season it barely reached 3.

Bet on the template. The greatest expense was borne by the sports staff, 8.1 million euros (200,000 less than in the previous year), of which 6 went to salaries. The cost of non-sports personnel is also set, the one that includes the sports management, technical secretariat, doctors, delegate, physios, kit man and the rest of the personnel with an employment contract, and which was 1.8 million euros. The accounts explain that it increases due to “the incorporation of workers to the administration staff.”

The cost of layoffs. Oviedo was forced to pay 380,000 euros in “compensation”, that is, contract terminations. Some of the payments correspond to the restructuring that Francesc Arnau carried out at the time, for which some footballers lowered an amount of their salary in exchange for receiving it at the time of their departure. It is a cost that has also been assumed this summer with the marches of Mossa and Christian Fernández.

450,000 euros in signings. Publicly, Oviedo did not announce having paid a transfer for any footballer. The accounts show, however, that 453,786 euros were paid in “acquisition expenses for players who can be registered in LaLiga”. The concept is broad and also includes payment for assignments or subscriptions to agents. It represents a saving of 150,000 euros compared to the previous year.

Improvement in the facilities. The club invested in improvements to the irrigation system of El Requexón (17,000 euros), cleaning up the stadium (41,000), video projectors (20,700), machinery for the gym, laundry and audiovisual areas (18,400) and the installation of solar panels and advances to suppliers (41,900).

Pachuca plans a deficit of 488,000 euros. Looking ahead to the current campaign, Oviedo foresees a deficit that would rise to 488,813 euros. Expenditure on the sports squad is estimated at 7.2 million, lower than in recent seasons. To compensate, the club forecasts income of 2.9 million in subscribers (which would mean an improvement of almost 600,000 euros on the last record), 7.5 in broadcasts or 2.8 in advertising. Losses would be offset by the latest expansion and CVC.

Carso, in the background. On August 11, the effective shareholder change in the club took place. The accounts at that time place Pachuca with 51% of the total shareholding and Carso with 19.13%, but the percentages have changed after the last capital increase in August.
