Szafnauer happy after Alonso time penalty reversed: “This is justice”

Fernando Alonso had already scored the necessary World Cup points before the Mexican Grand Prix weekend. The Spaniard’s penalty from the American Grand Prix was in fact reversed. Alpine team boss Otmar Szafnauer said this was the only right decision and the stewards’ decision is nothing more than justice.

Alonso crossed the line in seventh in Austin after a bizarre race. However, after a protest by Haas about a loose mirror, he was still punished. He fell way back in the final score and Alpine protested to rectify their star driver’s penalty. After long legal wrangling, Alonso regained his seventh place and was able to refute the focus to Mexico.

Justice

Alonso’s team principal Otmar Szafnauer was also pleased with the stewards’ decision. The Alpine team principal responded quite clearly to Motorsport.com: “I think we got the result that the sport deserved. This is justice, but of course I am biased because I work for this team. The protest was filed too late and had “That’s why we should never be treated. That was our whole argument. I think the FIA recognizes that now and they finally made the right decision.”

Deviations

That the decision of the stewards on the case took so long raised a lot of questions. After all, Alpine was only right after a right to review on Thursday evening. Szafnauer and his crew went through the rulebook to find the solution: “There are some deviations. When we took the time to look at the rules and they are being applied, the right decision was finally made.”
