Round table: Which “Reverse Retro” sweater is the most beautiful?

Throughout the season, NHL.com members will participate in roundtables to answer a variety of questions. By interacting with each other, our experts give their opinion on several hot topics across the NHL.

Today, they were offered the following statement: The teams unveiled version 2.0 of their “Reverse Retro” jerseys last week and are preparing to use them in regular season games. Which of these sweaters do you like the most?

Nicolas Ducharme, NHL.com journalist

As a big fan of baseball, I was tempted to say that of the Montreal Canadiens, which pays tribute to the Expos, but for the second year in a row, I have to choose that of the Minnesota Wild.

In my opinion, the organization had touched perfection last year by adopting the colors of the Minnesota North Stars, the team that preceded the Wild in the Twin Cities from 1967 to 1993. Not only does the design have the classic look which I appreciate for a hockey jersey, but I find the team logo even more beautiful without the red color.

Co-workers will say I like this uniform because I find myself at Subway eating a lot, but if I were the Wild, I’d swap my current colors for Reverse Retro.

The Los Angeles Kings nailed it with their Reverse Retro jersey last season and decided not to reinvent the wheel with this year’s edition, which is a wise move. Their jersey is once again one of the most beautiful in the NHL. Purple and gold, the first colors of the team, are still in the spotlight, on a white background this time with the first logo in Kings history.

I love that the jersey pays homage to the 1982 Kings who pulled off the ‘Miracle Over Manchester’ by coming back from a 5-0 deficit to defeat the Edmonton Oilers 6-5 in overtime in Game 3 of the best-of-five series between the two teams in the first round. Los Angeles had finally eliminated the band with Wayne Gretzky, widely favorite, in five games. I also like that we decided to use the old NHL logo on the collar. The retro aspect is perfectly successful.

If it were up to me, the Kings would trade their black and white jersey and their logo which I find very ordinary for these colors. Who knows, maybe we’ll be treated to a “Miracle on South Figueroa”!

The exercise of the Adidas company’s retro sweaters is a difficult one, because tastes are subjective and there will always be people to cry and express their indignation!

Personally, I have a special attachment to old logos. So I have to say that I really like the updated versions of the Senators, Capitals, Ducks and Rangers jerseys. But there’s not one that comes close to the old Penguins logo. This logo that reminds us of the great years of Mario Lemieux, Jaromir Jagr, Ron Francis, Larry Murphy, Kevin Stevens, and so on. So many memories to dominate at NHL94 on my Super Nintendo!

By the way, I underline the effort of the Canadiens to use powder blue to wink at the Montreal Expos. The concept could perhaps have been taken a little further, in my opinion. But hey, there are worse things in life than that!

I don’t know if it’s because the movie Power Play 2 marked my childhood, but the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim jersey was always one of my favorites when I was younger, and I’m more than happy to see that it is this avenue that has been favored for this Reverse Retro version.

I really like the use of the old logo with the current team colors, and what about those three lines on the sleeves that give this jersey a really unique look. Charlie Conway and Adam Banks would have looked great in this uniform!

If I too have in my top-5 the three jerseys that were selected by my colleagues, I however want to salute the audacity of the Florida Panthers. I love what they did by using the old crest that used to appear on their sleeve as their main logo, and using the colors of their third jersey from 2009. However, I would have preferred to see a panther somewhere on the jersey, and I think that’s what drives me to give them second place, behind the Anaheim one.
