After the discussions, the elections of the LOK Athletes’ Commission were held, where 33 athletes from various sports applied for seven seats (the list is at the end of the article).

The new LOK Athletes Commission, which will operate until 2026: Gunta Vaičule (Athletics), Anastasia Grigorieva (combat sport), Gunta Baško (basketball), Tom Skujins (cycling), Robert Stone (kayaking), Mārtiņš Pļaviņš (Beach volleyball), Harald Silow (speed skating).

The purpose of the athletes’ forum was to discuss various aspects that should be taken into account in the development of a professional athlete’s career, thereby bringing up the problems of the industry and promoting the formation of the athlete community. At the athletes’ forum, together with professionals in the field and experienced athletes, the main issues that help not only build a successful sports career, but also improve the quality of everyone’s life were discussed.

In the first discussion “Will sport be enough for life?” the questions were tried to be answered: how to make the best use of your sporting capital, how to strategically direct your career with a long-term view, how to manage your success most effectively in order to achieve financial success. There are a number of decisions that are important for professional athletes to think about today in order to increase their future well-being. Olympic champion coach Raimonds Feldmanis, track and field athlete Jānis Leitis, basketball player Gunta Baško and member of the Saeima Raimonds Bergmanis shared their experiences in this discussion.

The second discussion was devoted to the topic of psychological preparation: “Who is stronger – Antiņš or Lāčplēsis?” Sports success does not depend only on physical endurance and daily training load. To a large extent, the athlete’s path to success is formed by a number of other factors – starting from mental preparation, daily habits and finally with sports mentors who can bring individual success in the long term. In this panel discussion, it was clarified how to create your own formula for success most effectively. Lāsma Liepiņa, sports psychologist of the Latvian Olympic team, Ainars Bagatskis, coach of the Ukrainian national basketball team, and track and field athlete Līna Mūze also participated.

Every professional athlete’s name is also a brand that represents their values. Communication with the media, maintaining one’s image and messages to the audience play an increasingly important role in today’s sports world. By watching the world’s greatest athletes and how they perform on the public stage, we can learn to use successful tactics but not repeat typical mistakes. These questions were discussed in the third discussion panel “Athletes as a brand”, in which sports organization consultant and athlete manager Raimonds Zeps, sports photographer Mikus Kļaviņš and athlete mentor Pauls Pujāts participated.

LOK president Žoržs Tikmers and the former head of the Athletes’ Commission Gunta Vaičule also participated in the forum.
