MINIATURES – From Judge and Ohtani

Hector J. Cruz

It’s not possible to stay out of the MVP controversy between the American League’s top contenders, the Yankees’ Aaron Judge and the Los Angeles Angels’ Shohei Ohtani.

And why not? Because they’re both mega-stars of the game and they’re both in an off the charts campaign.

The numbers that I present on this occasion are traditional, nothing to go deep into sabermetrics, to simplify things.

Let’s look at pitcher Ohtani first and compare how this phenomenon has made it through 2021 with ease. Does that give you a chance to compete with Justin Verlander for the Cy Young? Not necessarily, though don’t rule out him receiving a few first-place votes.

SHOHEI OHTANI…AS PITCHER

RENGLON                       2022                          2021

RECORD                          15-8                           9-2

EFFECTIVENESS 2.35 3.18

INNNINGS/PUNCHOUTS 161/213 130.1/156

Verlander is 17-4 with a 1.80 ERA, with 175 strikeouts in 170 innings. Everything has been good for him, and it is believed that he will win easily.

Now look at Ohtani’s numbers as a hitter, and there is also the comparison with what he did in 2021, when he won the award unanimously.

Of course, he’s down on the home run line and will also be behind in RBIs and OBP.

His greatness is given by his double condition as a good pitcher and a good hitter, which had not happened since Babe Ruth at the beginning of the last century. But, watch out for this: Ruth was a pitcher for 5 years, and since he came to the Yankees he left that condition and was only a hitter. It’s that simple.

Aaron’s is also historic, not only for chasing Roger Maris’ record of 61 home runs, which belongs to the American League and the Yankees. It is that the man is involved in everything, even fighting for the triple crown.

Prizes are announced at the end of the World Series in November. But, the valid statistics are from the regular calendar, nothing from the playoffs.

THE CLASSIFIED: The six American League teams for the playoffs have already been defined. Among the three division winners, the two best records “sit down”, a kind of privilege, which this time corresponds to the Houston Astros and New York Yankees.. A Division winner, Cleveland, gets into the wild card balloon and would face Tampa Bay in the first series 3-2.. On the other side are the other two wild cards, Seattle and Toronto . As you can see, all these clubs have a lot of quality.

In the National League, the Los Angeles Dodgers and St. Louis Cardinals have already entered as division winners, with the East pending between Atlanta and the Mets. San Diego is set as a wild card, and the fight between Philadelphia and Milwaukee continues. Yesterday, Philadelphia outscored Washington 8-1, and Miami beat Milwaukee 4-3, so the gap between the two is 2 for the Phillies.

The Dodgers go to rest, just like the winner of the East, Mets or Braves.

TRIBUTE: The St. Louis Cardinals had their last regular game at home yesterday, but they will continue there in the playoffs. However, they took the opportunity to pay a farewell tribute to two team legends, Albert Pujols and Yadier Molina… Pujols took advantage of Sunday’s stage to hit a double and a home run, his 23rd of the year and 702 for his career. In addition, he had his 64th RBI and moved ahead of Babe Ruth on the all-time list with 2,214 … Ruth had 2,213.

ON A STREAM: In Saturday’s activity, the Houston Astros beat Tampa 2-1, and Dominican Cirstian Javier threw 6 zeros out of 2 hits. Now, the man has a tremendous streak of 25.1 shutout innings, simply spectacular. His record has improved to 11-9 with a 2.54 ERA.
