Lorenzetti, president of Racing 92, wonders about the salary cap of Toulouse and La Rochelle

Interviewed in the podcast Crunch of our colleagues from The Team, Jacky Lorenzetti, the president of Racing 92, swept the news of the Ile-de-France club. In particular, he mentioned the possible recruitment of a “great player” : “We may be signing a very great player, but it’s not a 10. In terms of recruitment, we can’t do without having the opinion of Stuart Lancaster (future club manager, Editor’s note). It’s normal.”

On this subject, the Altosequan leader returned to the salary cap (ceiling of the payroll of clubs) in force in the Top 14. Casting doubts on two of his competitors, Toulouse and La Rochelle. “We flirt with the salary cap. There is a yellow line and we do not set foot in it. Yesterday, all day we had the salary cap manager at the club. We had the police of the police who came for a day to check everything and they are very sharp. We were talking about an overrun of 2,000 euros. It’s complicated on some interpretations.»

And to add:When you see Toulouse recruiting so much, you wonder how they do it. Same when you see La Rochelle recruiting so much this summer, you wonder how they are doing! When we see Racing 92 recruiting so much, we say to ourselves that the club is in real estate and in wine (two sectors in which Lorenzetti has invested, editor’s note), they pay players in wine and real estate. All fantasies are allowed! But it is clear that French rugby is doing well today thanks to the salary Cap and the Jiffs (Players from training courses). But the downside is that players’ salaries go down. It can be painful too.”

Contract worth one million euros a year

According to him, this salary cap limits the possibilities of recruiting one or more big names in world rugby. “It’s complicated to have a mega star now. The name of a player is circulating at the moment, we are told more than a million euros a year, we don’t even open the file! It is not possible ! If we put 10% of the salary cap on a player, we have to put 29 other players in 90% of the salary cap. Not to mention the young people. If we have a big youth policy, it reduces the payroll of the pros by the same amounthe continues. This summer, we let Tanga and Colombe go because we couldn’t follow the offers made by La Rochelle. Otherwise, we were breaking a certain justice compared to other players who were of the same generation and who had the same level of skills.
