Letters from readers – La Opinion de Málaga

Since the American tennis players Pete Sampras and André Agassi were number one and two in the ATP ranking, in the year 2000, no other country had had two tennis players of the same nationality occupying the top positions in the world ranking, until that Carlos Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal have achieved it, who are currently the ones who occupy such a privileged position, turning Spain into the standard-bearer of professional tennis, a satisfaction and pride for all lovers of a sport in which we have always stood out. From the unforgettable Santana and Gimeno, through those who were also number one, Moyá, Ferrero, Arancha, Garbiñe and also Nadal, as well as many others of the highest level such as Bruguera, Corretja, Berasategui, Bautista, Carreño, or Badosa, our country has always had, at all stages, our representatives at the top, with six victories in the Davis Cup and five in the Federation Cup, but never before had two of them managed to occupy the first two positions simultaneously, a milestone, a true historical milestone that demonstrates the strength of our sport and tennis in particular. We have to congratulate each other, congratulate both players and hope that they remain at the top of a power that Alcaraz has reached for a long time, being the youngest in history to achieve it, an extraordinary player who will be at the top for a long time, as well like Nadal, who although he is currently ranked second, is already an old acquaintance of the top positions in a ranking that he has led, since 2005, for 209 weeks.
