“Indonesian national team coach Shin Tae Yong, who achieved good results in Indonesia, made a surprising statement,” wrote Xsportnews.
The media also mentioned that hundreds of victims of the Kanjuruhan Tragedy died because of the suppression and riots that occurred at the Kanjuruhan Stadium.
“A total of 181 [132-red] people died in the process of suppression and riots in Kanjuruhan. This is the second highest death toll on a football pitch since the Peru incident in 1964 that killed 330 people.”
The Korean media then explained Shin Tae Yong’s full statement on Instagram which sparked controversy among netizens.
“Someone who really loves Indonesian football with sincerity and gives full support from behind so that football can develop is the General Chair of PSSI,” said Shin Tae Yong in a post on Instagram.
“In my opinion, if the PSSI General Chair must be responsible for everything that happened and resign, then I must resign,” said Shin Tae Yong added.
STY’s statement indeed surprised Indonesian football fans. Although the performance of the Indonesian national team rose in the hands of the coach, most netizens were willing to be left behind for the sake of humanity towards the victims of the Kanjuruhan Tragedy.
