The six-man discussion about Joshua Kimmich (27) was started by world champion captain Philipp Lahm (38), who had played in the sixth round at the 2014 World Cup.
Kimmich had advised Lahm that he had to think more defensively. European champion Markus Babbel (50) and vice world champion Didi Hamann (49) agreed with the DFB honorary captain. Sami Khedira (35) was the classic six in Germany’s 2014 World Cup team.
Now the man who will rate the Bayern international at the World Cup in Qatar as an ARD expert is also getting involved in the discussion about Kimmich.

Khedira: “For me, the six is the most important man in modern football. It determines the rhythm, gives stability, balance – or not. Jo Kimmich has one of the most kilometers he tears down in every game. In terms of the team, it’s important for him to be an anchor. Kimmich plays outstanding balls, the best chips, has great timing…”

Khedira: “Sometimes he can take a little more back, play smarter, sometimes want less. Just like Sergio Busquets: get a little smarter tactically, don’t want too much. If he goes 750 meters less per game and is in the right position: That would be ideal. It’s about remaining defense. If our great offensive players can rely on someone standing behind them and cleaning up: That would be the goal and a small point of criticism for Kimmich, if there was one at all in the world-class player Joshua Kimmich.”
Does Musiala always have to play?
Khedira: “What the boy is doing is fantastic. He still plays like he’s kicking in the street. But: Every contact, every movement makes sense for him. Musiala has to play in this condition, period.”
