Go Ahead Eagles settled with Excelsior on Saturday evening. René Hake’s team won 3-1 and passed the Rotterdam team in the Eredivisie. Fortuna Sittard suffered the first league defeat under trainer Julio Velázquez against Sparta Rotterdam: 3-1.
Go Ahead Eagles and Excelsior were tied for a long time, but just before half-time, the home team struck twice. Willum Willumsson topped off a good individual action with a goal, while Bobby Adekanye shot the ball through the legs of goalkeeper Stijn van Gassel after a good combination.
Isac Lidberg increased the problems for Excelsior after an hour of play. The attacker of Go Ahead rushed towards the goal after a long ball, kept his direct opponent away and hit the target.
Excelsior did something in return via a striking header from Lazaros Lamprou, but that was it in De Adelaarshorst. Go Ahead and Excelsior now both have thirteen points, but the club from Deventer has a better goal difference and is tenth.
Go Ahead continues the strong series in the Eredivisie with the victory against Excelsior. The team remained unbeaten in the last seven games (three wins, four draws).
Sparta continues strong home series
Fortuna started strong against Sparta. Tijjani Noslin rushed past some defenders and scored with a diagonal shot. The Limburgers could not enjoy the 0-1 for long, because the detached Arno Verschueren headed in a cross from Sven Mijnans moments later.
Sparta had the better of the game after the break and that quickly led to the 2-1. Ximo Navarro fouled Koki Saito, after which referee Serdar Gözübüyük pointed to the spot. Vito van Crooij used the penalty, although goalkeeper Ivor Pandur still touched the ball. Verschueren headed Sparta into safe harbor ten minutes before time. This time Van Crooij was the declarant.
Burak Yilmaz created little danger for Fortuna, but caused a lot of noise. The striker repeatedly demanded a penalty after alleged violations against teammates, but Gözübüyük refused to cooperate. In the second half, the referee was tired of Yilmaz’s complaints and punished him with a yellow card. As a result, the attacker has been suspended for the upcoming match with FC Emmen.
With the fifth home win in a row, Sparta climbs to sixth place in the Eredivisie and that is a special achievement by the team from Rotterdam. The last time Sparta won at least half of its first twelve Eredivisie matches was in 1986.
Fortuna, which won four of the first six league matches under Velázquez, remains in eleventh position. The Spaniard was the successor to the dismissed Sjors Ultee last month.
