The football associations from Chile and Peru are fighting before the International Court of Arbitration for Sport to exclude Ecuador from the 2022 World Cup.

In essence, the case is about full-backs Byron Castillo, whose eligibility to play in the World Cup qualifier is disputed by both associations. World governing body FIFA again rejected the appeal from Chile and Peru on September 16 and confirmed a decision by its own disciplinary committee.

This had come to the conclusion, “that the player has permanent citizenship of Ecuador in accordance with art. 5 para. 1 of the by-laws to the FIFA Statutes“. Ecuador will face hosts Qatar in the opening game on November 20.

The Cas announced on Friday (September 30, 2022) that the arbitration proceedings had begun and were at an early stage. Peru and Chile are each hoping to secure Ecuador’s place in the finals.
