campuses, fixture and Biguá mega favorite

With Biguá as the great candidate to achieve a historic three-time championship, The 20th edition of the Uruguayan Basketball League begins this Thursday.

Nacional will face Olimpia at Larre Borges’ court at 8:15 pm, Trouville will face Goes at 8:30 pm on his field and Hebraica Macabi herself will face Larre Borges at Unión Atlética.

On Friday, the stage will be complemented by matches between Urupan-Peñarol (20.15 in Urupan), Aguada-Defensor Sporting (20.30 in Aguada), Urunday Universitario-Malvín (20.30 in Urunday).

The two-time champion Biguá will have a free date in the first stage. The tournament has 13 teams because Stockolmo, who had achieved promotion in El Metro 2021, gave up playing in the League for economic reasons.

On the second date, Biguá will debut against Defensor Sporting and at that stage two main courses will be played: Peñarol-Nacional (Monday, 8:15 p.m.) and Goes-Aguada (Tuesday, 8:15 p.m.), both in the Palacio Peñarol.

Led by Santiago Vidal and with the same trio of foreigners that shone last season (Donald Sims, Victor Rudd -they were also in the 2021 League-, Luis Santos), Biguá goes in search of a three-time championship that was elusive to the three teams that tried it in the history of the League: Biguá itself, Malvín, Hebraica Macabi and Aguada.

Peñarol, finalist of the last League, kept Pablo López as coach and will seek to be the protagonist again. The aurinegro will start with -5 points due to the incidents of violence generated last season against Aguada, Malvín and in the final with Biguá where a glass flask was thrown that exploded in the middle of the Antel Arena field with the players in the game scenario.

Peñarol had to pay a $400,000 fine to lift the 16 court closures with which he was sanctioned last season.

Due to the composition of the squads, Aguada and Hebraica Macabi will come out to fight while Goes will seek to repeat the excellent regular phase he had last year and Defensor Sporting change the discreet image he left in 2021-2022.
