Werder’s amazing halftime

Von: MARKUS BALCZUWEIT, MARCUS MÜHLENBECK, MICHEL SCHRÖER, Henrik Hoelzmann and DENNIS LAMB

Werder sweeps over Gladbach like a green and white tornado!

The climber overruns Borussia with a furious first half. Gladbach went down 5-1, and Bremen were 4-0 at half-time.

Madness: Werder scored three goals within eight minutes in a spectacular opening phase – a green-white frenzy!

5. Minute: Schmid crosses from the right with a train on goal. At the far post, Füllkrug Scally escapes and artistically pushes the ball over the line as it falls. 1:0 Werder!

8. Minute: Just 2:48 minutes later, Sommer snatched the ball off Schmid’s foot at the last moment. The ball bounces in front of Ducksch’s feet, who pushes into the empty goal from 16 meters – first premier league goal after a 811-minute lull throughout the season. 2:0 Werder!

13. Minute: Bensebaini heads catastrophically into Ducksch’s barrel. He pulls towards the goal, claims the ball against Friedrich, puts it in the middle. That’s where the lonely jug that came along pushes in. 3:0 Werder!

But a Gladbacher of all people put the crown on the crazy first half!

37. Minute: The completely disoriented Bensebaini sinks a Ducksch cross unchallenged with the hoe (!) In his own goal. Dream own goal, 4:0 Werder!

It’s the first home win of the season and the highest half-time lead in Bremen’s Bundesliga history! Overall, the green-whites had only led 4-0 at halftime three times before: 1967 against KSC, 1988 at Schalke and 2010 in Hanover.

But what was going on with Gladbach!?

The second-best defensive in the league up to kick-off conceded as many goals against a promoted team in 37 minutes as in all seven games before! In view of an underground defensive performance and the weak evaluation of chances, the terrific 3-0 win against Leipzig before the international break seems like it was from another era.

Thuram still makes it 4-1 (63′), but Bremen quickly counters with Weiser (73′). Bremen plays into a green and white ecstasy!

One in particular is really getting off to a flying start: Niclas Füllkrug (29/two goals, one assist). The centre-forward is now the league’s top scorer with seven goals in eight games. Will the former U19 and U20 international still be an option for the World Cup in Qatar? In any case, national coach Hansi Flick (57) is missing a powerhouse with a strong header like Füllkrug (1.88 meters, 84 kilos)…
