Arminia Bielefeld loses the home game against Karlsruher SC in the 2nd Bundesliga with 1:2 (0:1) and remains on the bottom place in the table.

The KSC, on the other hand, moved up to two points from the promotion relegation rank at least temporarily with their fifth win of the season.

Also bitter for Bielefeld: Frederik Jäkel had to be substituted before the break with suspected concussion.

Six changes in Bielefeld’s starting eleven

The Karlsruhe team started on Friday (October 7th, 2022) with the team that won against 1. FC Nürnberg. “No reason for changes!”, the club tweeted. In contrast to his colleague Christian Eichner, however, Bielefeld’s coach Daniel Scherning saw an increased need. He made six changes compared to the starting eleven, which experienced the kick-off at 1: 4 in Düsseldorf on the pitch. However, some changes were forced by illness and injury.

The first chances of the game were offered to KSC by Fabian Schleusener, who had scored 1-0 against 1. FC Nürnberg a week earlier. First, the striker shot over the goal from 14 meters, then he headed a little later on the post (8th minute). The Bielefeld team were unsettled and had to put up with whistles from the fans early on.

It is significant that goalkeeper Martin Fraisl almost lost the ball to Malik Batmaz in the penalty area. The attempt at dribbling went just fine.

The bottom of the table didn’t come into play until the middle of the first half. A shot from right-back Guilherme Ramos, one of the new starters, was put to the test by Karlsruhe goalkeeper Marius Gersbeck of the evening.

But it was just a flash in the pan. The KSC remained the determining and significantly better team. In the 43rd minute, Schleusener ensured that this was also reflected in the result. His shot from 16 meters slipped under Fraisl’s body into the net for the break.

KSC responds promptly to compensation

The second half began attractively in front of 18,066 spectators on the Alm, and gratifying for the Bielefeld team. Janni Serra scored with a powerful shot after the ball rolled a bit happily in front of his feet (52nd). However, the guests immediately found an answer, because a slightly deflected long-range shot by Marvin Wanitzek also found its way into the goal (54th).

Despite the renewed setback, Arminia stayed in the game much better and longer than in the first half. But the East Westphalians rarely had chances, for example through Serra (57th). The victory for Karlsruhe, who had significantly more ball possession and a better pass rate, was clearly deserved.
