Aytekin responds to allegations of bias: “I’m not a Bavarian

The upcoming classic between Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern is already a topic of conversation days before kick-off. Above all, Deniz Aytekin’s appointment as a referee is criticized by many BVB fans. The 44-year-old has now responded to the allegations of bias.

Although FIFA referee Deniz Aytekin is one of the best German referees, he will referee the classic game between Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern for the first time next Saturday. Since Aytekin belongs to the Bavarian state association, he has never been allowed to whistle the top game. This time, however, the DFB deviates from its own regulations. But it’s not the first time that Aytekin has directed a Bayern game. During the corona pandemic, the association’s regulations were relaxed, so that Aytekin has already whistled a game of the record champions three times.

“I’m preparing for it professionally – like for all other games”

Immediately after the referee appointment, BVB fans poured criticism towards the DFB. Accusations of bias were quickly raised. Aytekin himself is calm about it: “I’m not Bavarian – I’m Franconian! That’s a difference,” he explained to “BILD”. Aytekin was born in Nuremberg and lives in Fürth. The 44-year-old also made it clear that the classic was a completely normal Bundesliga game for him: “I’m preparing for it professionally – like for all other games.”

It is interesting: Looking at the statistics, the BVB supporters should be quite satisfied that Aytekin will lead the game on Saturday at Signal Iduna Park. BVB has played 32 games under the direction of the referee in the Bundesliga and DFB Cup, 20 of which have been won. They only left the pitch as losers seven times.
