ATP > Delgado (former coach of Murray): “I always laugh at the comments of people who say that everyone coaches in matches”

The rumor had been launched in June that the ATP was going to allow coaching and had already caused a stir. However, this did not stop the ambitions of the professional players’ association as this new rule was applied in the wake of Wimbledon.

Established for a few months now and many tournaments, this authorization is still controversial, especially with a big name in coaching, the former coach of Andy Murray, Jamie Delgado.

The Briton, questioned by our colleagues from Sport 365revealed his total disagreement with this new rule which, for him, makes tennis lose some of its uniqueness.

“I always had the feeling that a tennis player must solve by himself all the problems that appear in a match. It is an element that distinguishes tennis from other sports. I know there has been a lot of pressure in the media to have player-coach interaction during a game. I always laugh at the comments of people who say that everyone does match coaching. It is not the case at all »explained the 45-year-old former player.

This statement will “surely” upset Stefanos Tsitsipas who said some time ago: “Coaching has always existed for absolutely all players. They should have allowed it thousands of years ago”.

The ATP has been trying to innovate for some time, like at the Next Gen ATP Finals, however it does not please everyone…
