ALHAMA DE MURCIA / Alhama, co-organizer of the regional conference ´Women and Sports´

This Wednesday, October 19, the Artillery Barracks in Murcia hosts a professional conference that addresses how the presence of women in sport has evolved. The event is held in pavilion two, second floor, with free admission and takes place from 9:00 in the morning, ending at 5:00 p.m. Athletes from the regional spectrum attend the event to talk about their personal experiences in the sector.

As the main guest is the sports journalist Paloma del Río, veteran broadcaster on Radio Televisión Española (RTVE), who has put her voice in rhythmic gymnastics, artistic gymnastics, figure skating and horse riding competitions. She has also held different positions in the Sports Directorate of TVE; chief editor (2009) and director of Sports Programs (2009 – 2013). She is the coordinator of Sponsorships and Federations, she has covered various European and World Championships, as well as 9 summer and 6 winter Olympic Games. In 2015 she was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Order of Sports Merit and that same year she published her autobiographical book ‘Enredando en la memoria’

The opening of the day, has been carried out by the director of elDiario in the Region of Murcia, Elisa Reche, together with the journalist and coordinator of the day, Olga Lorente, the mayor of Murcia, José Antonio Serrano, the Councilor for Culture , Tourism and Sports, Pedro García Rex, and the Councilor for Equality, Teresa Franco.

The management of women’s sports

The journalist Olga Lorente moderates a talk that addresses the public policies implemented to promote sport. The participants are:

Rosa Sánchez, Councilor for Sport in the City Council of Alhama de Murcia.

Pruden Guerrero, president of the Murcia Region Athletics Federation.

Women in regional sports journalism

Olga Lorente addresses with Teresa García, editor and presenter of sports on the public channel of the 7 Region of Murcia, the role of journalists in the sector at the regional level.

Conversing with Paloma del Río

Olga Lorente talks with Paloma del Río about her journalistic career in the world of sports, and how she has experienced being a woman in this field during her 40 years of work.

Olympic talk

Paloma del Río reverses her role in the event and becomes the moderator of a talk with Olympic athletes who play in the Region. The guests are:

Laura Gil, professional basketball player currently in the Valencia Basket club. She has been international in all the lower categories of the Spanish team, achieving a record of nine medals in 6 years. Since her senior team debut she has won European gold, Olympic silver and world championships.

Úrsula Ruiz, athlete who competes in the shot put. She has been 23 times champion of Spain from 2008 to 2020, in addition to participating in the Olympic Games, World Championships and European Championships since 2010.

Luci Pascua has played for almost 20 years in the national and international basketball elite and has played more than 200 games with the Spanish team (silver at the Rio Olympics and medals at the World and European Championships). She currently plays for UCAM Murcia, in the women’s First National.

Women’s sporting successes in the Region of Murcia

Olga Lorente moderates a discussion of the sporting successes that different women in sport have brought to the Region. The guests are:

Esther Mora, double world champion in kettlebell lifting.

Consuelo Campoy, Spanish futsal player. Her current team is the Roldán FSF of the First Division of women’s futsal in Spain.

Carlota Prendes, Spanish fighter of various styles of martial arts such as Jūjutsu and Grappling, who is the winner of several national and international titles, such as the gold medal in Europe of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu in 20201 and the bronze medal in the World Cup of Brazilian Jiu-jitsu of 2021.

Marina Lizarazu, basketball player at Hozono Global Jairis Alcantarilla. She has been international from lower categories, winning five medals, three gold at the European Championships in 2011, 2013 and 2015 and two silver medals at the 2012 World Championships and the 2014 European Championships.

Rebeca Cotano, basketball player at Hozono Global Jairis Alcantarilla. She has made a large part of her career at Valencia Basket, with 139 matches played from the First National and up to the state elite.

Sport and health

To end the day, Olga Lorente moderates a talk in which women’s sport and its relationship with the world of health are addressed. The guests are:

Sonia Ruiz Escribano, high performance Olympic athlete and wheelchair basketball coach. She is also a deputy in the Regional Assembly of Murcia.

Team Flechas Rosas, is a project aimed at the rehabilitation of patients with breast cancer and launched in 2017 through the Arco Lorca archery club, the Alimer Foundation and the Virgen del Alcázar Hospital. The recipients are those women with breast cancer who have undergone mastectomies (removal of the breast).

Dragon Boat Team, canoeing modality of Chinese origin, with more than 2000 years old. In Murcia they have a team focused on the rehabilitation of patients with breast cancer.
