After the disgrace, Nymburka Sokolovský takes over basketball players from Slavia

Štelmahers came to Nymburk in July as a replacement for the Slovenian Aleksander Sekulič, who nodded to the engagement in Krasnodar. The Latvian coach signed a contract for two seasons, but ended after five league games.

On Saturday, Nymburk lost to Slavia, a newcomer to the top competition, and suffered two defeats in the regular season of the NBL for the first time since 2011/12. He is fifth in the table. Both previous matches of the 18-time Czech champion in the Champions League also ended in failure.

Sokolovský is looking for an assistant. “He helped assemble the squad and he has the best prerequisites to find a way to fulfill his potential,” said the club’s CEO Ondřej Šimeček in the address of the former national team captain.

The 45-year-old Sokolovský played for Nymburk between 2004 and 2012 and with eleven titles he is the second most successful player in the history of the league after Petr Benda. The five-year-younger pivot, who still wears the Nymburk jersey, has 14 gold medals from the highest competition.

Sokolovský ended his playing career in 2015 and then coached youth national teams. He also leads the Nymburk academy and this season he coached the Nymburk Polabí reserve team in the first league.

“Recently, I have missed training a lot. Of course, I would prefer it to be in a different situation, but I believe that our team has only shown 50 percent of its potential so far. I would like to get the other half out of it as well,” said Sokolovský, who is the first Czech coach of the team after Michal Ježdík, who ended up on the bench in 2006. Since then, Israelis Muli Kacurin, Ronen Ginzburg, Oren Amiel, Lithuanian Kestutis Kemzura, Sekulic and Štelmahers have taken turns on the bench.

The last time Nymburk changed coaches during the season was five years ago, when Ginzburg left to devote himself fully to his work with the Czech national team.
