◆The 44th Miryang Citizens Sports Competition held… Carry on an inexhaustible history

The ’44th Miryang Citizen’s Sports Festival’, which will be held for the first time in three years, will be held at the Miryang Sports Complex on the 8th.

This competition will take over the spirit of the Miryang Arirang Festival and prepare the venue for a festival that will once again make the citizens of Miryang excited.

The start of the Miryang Citizens’ Sports Festival, which marks its 44th anniversary this year, goes back to before liberation, and started with the ‘Miryang County People’s Athletic Association’ in 1926 and held every year until 1945. At that time, competitions of a similar size were held only in Seoul, Daegu, and Miryang, so you can guess its status.

Three years later, while the Republic of Korea was going through a turbulent period, a wind of change blew in the sports world in Miryang. After the establishment of the Miryang Public Stadium (currently Sammun-dong Public Stadium) in 1946 and the ‘Athletic Competition to commemorate the 8.15 Liberation and establishment of the new government’ in 1948, it was not until 1953 that the event was held again under the name of ‘Gunmin Grand Athletic Association’.

This name was changed to ‘Citizen Sports Competition’ when Miryang City was established in 1995 as an urban-rural complex integrating Miryang-si and Miryang-gun, and it is still in use.

The first runner of this year’s Citizens’ Sports Competition is the Gogojanggu performance. Gogojanggu is different from the janggu we are familiar with, it is a janggu that entrusts the body to an exciting rhythm in accordance with a trot in 4/4 time or pop and modern music. Since its establishment in 1997, Janggu has been sublimating the exciting charm of Janggu into Korea’s representative pop culture art. The sound of percussion instruments resounding ‘dumpling’ energizes the body that has not yet woken up.

The entrance ceremony of the Eup, Myeon and Dong team is also a must-see. After being lined up in the auxiliary stadium, the Eup, Myeon, and Dong teams, who enter the sports complex, are expected to attract the attention of the audience by displaying their own unique and distinctive signs.

At the end of the competition, a harmony is held. Singers Jin-sung and Park Hye-shin’s congratulatory performance boosts the excitement. In the ensuing Oullim Hanmadang, anyone, regardless of age or gender, can show off their singing skills on stage.

There will be a total of 6 events (Mixed Division 3, Non-Mixed Division 3).

In the cooperative obstacle event, the youth team participates. Move the props under the running runners so that the stepping stones do not break. At this point, attention is important. Release the legs at the right time so that the runner does not stop. It is a game where admiration comes from cooperation and laughter comes from quadrants.

Adults participate in the Hangung event. It is a lifestyle sports that everyone can enjoy by combining the strengths of the traditional game of tuho and western darts. Align the target, hangung pin, and eyes in a straight line and swing your arms lightly. The moment it hits the center of the target, cheers erupt.

In the women’s division, a penalty shootout game is prepared. Five players per team kick the ball in turn. You can feel the thrill of a game in which mistakes and surprises abound.

There are three events in the mixed division. Rugby ball relay dribbling, in which 6 players dribble a rugby ball with a relay to determine the ranking, a tug-of-war with 50 players per team, and an 800m obstacle run will decorate the finale of the event.

Mayor Park Il-ho of Miryang said, “I am very happy to be able to safely hold the Miryang Citizens’ Sports Festival, which boasts a long tradition and history.” said.
