“Who is the Pigeon this morning?”: when the mayor of Liège tackles a French journalist after the coronation of Evenepoel

They tell us about the “seum” of Courtois and the “wasted generation” of the Red Devils. We explain to them how it is in the second week of Roland-Garros and we joke in front of all the Facebook posts of the “French Federation of Lose”. Like brothers and sisters, the Belgians and the French enjoy sleeping together. And sometimes it moves. The mayor of the city of Liège went there with his punchline this weekend.

Florian Pigeon, journalist for Eurosport, launched hostilities before the start of the World Road Cycling Championship in Australia. He tweeted a video of an inconsolable Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal at the Laver Cup where the former was bidding farewell to the world of tennis. As a caption, a little spade to the neighbors. “Belgium waking up tomorrow morning when neither Van Aert nor Evenepoel will be on the podium”laughs the sports journalist.

No luck. During the night, the young Remco Evenepoel left the whole peloton behind on the Australian roads. An attack two laps from the finish, to crush the pedals as much as your opponents until the finish. The occasion was too good. He will obviously be chambered Florian Pigeon.

And it was Willy Demeyer, the mayor of the city of Liège, who allowed himself a little spade. “Who is the Pigeon now?”writes the mayor in reference to the last name of the journalist.

A great supporter of Belgian athletes, Jean-Michel Javaux, former co-president of French-speaking ecologists, also reacted. “This tweet has aged badly”, he wrote, sharing images of Remco with the rainbow jersey. We’re laughing, but our French friends will quickly return the favor.
