The young Polish tennis player Iga Swiatek defeated the Tunisian Ons Jabeur in straight sets to lift her first US Open title and third Grand Slam of her career. Swiatek, the world number one, beat Jabeur, who will be number two, 6-2 and 7-6 (7/5).

The 21-year-old Polish woman and double champion of Roland Garros (2020 and 2022), remains intractable in the finals, with a full number of wins in the last 10 she has played. The jewel from Warsaw has not even dropped a set in any final since the one she lost in her career in Lugano in 2019.

For her part, Jabeur, runner-up in July at Wimbledon, missed her second chance to be the first African to lift a Grand Slam title. The 28-year-old Tunisian overcame a blazing start from Swiatek, who took the first set in half an hour, and battled in the second until forcing the tiebreak, in which she even held a 4-4 lead. 5.

After his loss to Elena Rybakina at Wimbledon, the Tunisian starred in a spectacular run in New York in which she only dropped one set in six matches and razed France’s Caroline Garcia, the fittest player. The first African to compete for the US Open trophy, Jabeur crashed out in the final against a Swiatek who had advanced through the tournament keeping a low profile and containing her expectations.

In the decisive match, Swiatek presented his most devastating version, with which he captured six trophies earlier in the season, including Roland Garros, and added the trophy of a second Grand Slam to his showcase. In a women’s circuit without a clear dominator since the decline of Serena Williams, Swiatek is the first to win two of the four Grand Slams in the same season since 2016.
