September 10th is our magic tennis day

Millions of fans around the world cheered for Jule Niemeier (23) on Monday evening. After winning the first set in the round of 16 of the US Open against world number one Iga Swiatek, she faced a sensation. Bitter: The Pole (Quarterfinals Thursday against Pegula) won the match, kicked the last German out of the tournament. Nevertheless, Saturday is finally back Tennis-Holiday!

Starting at 10pm today, September 10, Swiatek will battle Ons Jabeur to succeed Emma Raducanu (eliminated in round 1) and claim the 2022 title. Even before the match it is clear that again no German will win the tournament. Finally made it Angelique Kerber 2016 (6: 3, 4: 6, 6: 4 against Karolina Plíšková). The day she won the Grand Slam tournament: the 10. September!

Because: In addition to Kerber’s US Open victory in 2016, there was a lot of cheering on September 10th.

Flashback: It is September 10, 1988 when Steffi Graf becomes the first German to win the US Open. With a 6: 3, 3: 6, 6: 1 against Argentine Gabriela Sabatini, she not only secured victory. She is also the third tennis player ever to win all Grand Slam tournaments in one year (only Margaret Court/1970 and Maureen Connolly/1953 before her).

By the way, just one year after Graf’s first triumph, Boris Becker is celebrating at the US Open. In the final against US star Ivan Lendl, our German tennis star wins 7:6, 1:6, 6:3, 7:6. In the second round he was already on the verge of being eliminated. He lost the first two sets against Derrick Rostagno (USA) and already had two match points against him. But Becker fought back and won the game.

Becker after the match: “This is perhaps the best moment in my tennis life. It was definitely more emotional than Wimbledon.” The day he wins the US Open: September 10th!
