US Open – Caroline Garcia, 8th French in the Grand Slam semi-finals

There are semi-finals and semi-finals. Some look like the absolute Grail. Others, like that reached by Caroline Garcia at the US Open, after a new show of force last night against Coco Gauff, has more of a taste of “come back to it”. Even if it will be the very first of his career, we can’t help but see the beginning of an even bigger dream.

If, however, the adventure were to end against Ons Jabeur – as the logic of the ranking would have it -, Caroline Garcia would have nevertheless sealed a sizeable performance, already: in the Open era, she is only the eighth Frenchwoman to reach the Grand Slam semi-finals, after – in order – Françoise Dürr (Wimbledon 1970, Roland-Garros 1972-73), Brigitte Simon (Roland-Garros 1978), Mary Pierce (Roland-Garros 1994, 2000- 05, Australian Open 1995-97, US Open 2005), Nathalie Tauziat (Wimbledon 1998), Amélie Mauremo (Australian Open 1999, 2006, Wimbledon 2002-04-05-06, US Open 2002-06), Nathalie Dechy (Australian Open 2005) and Marion Bartoli (Wimbledon 2007-13, Roland-Garros 2011). For comparison, there were 33 among French players.

In this list, Caroline Garcia is also the sixth to reach the last four without losing a set after Dürr (Wimbledon 1970), Simon (Roland-Garros 1978), Pierce (Roland-Garros 1994, Australian Open 1995, US Open 2005), Mauresmo (Wimbledon 2005) and Bartoli (Wimbledon 2013). And she will therefore be the third to play a semi-final in New York after Pierce and Mauresmo, the first named being the only one to have then played the final, in 2005 (beaten by Kim Clijsters).

Now, if Garcia wins her next two matches at the Arthur-Ashe stadium, she will become the first Frenchwoman in history to win the American Grand Slam. You read that right: history. Even the immense Suzanne Lenglen has never won there, for the good reason that she had only played there once, in 1921, sick and beaten in her first match by Mallory Bjurdstedt. But of all that, of course, we are still very far from it…
