Berlin World champion Toni Kroos is apparently rising in the circle of the absolute top earners in international football. The midfield strategist has received a new contract with his club Real Madrid until 2022, the club confirmed on Wednesday. Kroos himself later wanted to comment. According to reports from the Bild newspaper and the Spanish Marca, the contract should bring him 20 million euros gross per year.

With a term of six years, the 26-year-old would earn 120 million euros. Born in Greifswald, he came to Madrid in 2014 and still had a contract until 2020. It would be the highest-paying contract that a German player has ever signed.

In Madrid, Kroos would catch up with top stars like Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, who also get around 20 million euros a year. Real coach Zinedine Zidane has apparently pushed for an early contract extension. “It’s lucky to have a player like him,” said the former world footballer recently.

The 74-time national player would also be record holder in Germany, so far Thomas Müller (Bayern Munich) has been number one with an income of up to 15 million euros per year. Bastian Schweinsteiger is said to bring it to 14 million euros at Manchester United, Ilkay Gündogan to 12 million euros at Manchester City.
