Baseball is a team sport with players on each team assigned specific roles. A pitcher and catcher are at the center of the baseball team, while the other players form the other five positions. There are four fielders who stand close to the bases: a first baseman, a second baseman, a shortstop, and a third baseman. The first baseman’s job is to make force plays at first base. The first baseman’s job is to make force outs and make throws. In most situations, he will stand with his glove facing the catcher or pitcher and stretch toward the throw. Keeping his glove facing the thrower reduces the time it takes for the thrower to reach him and prevents the runner from reaching base. If the throw is close, the first baseman can pull off the bag early to convince the umpire that the ball reached his glove before he reached first base. Another important role of the first baseman is to cut off throws from the outfield. While the first baseman receives most throws from the right or center fielder, he must avoid being too close to the line.

The umpire should not be tempted to make a judgment call based on personal opinion. He or she should wait until a play has ended before making an arm motion to signal the end of the play.

While the position is important, it should not be confused with a player’s position on the field. The Pitcher is first, but he can move around the field to help the team score runs.
