Prior to its release, the new horror film Smile received a great review from acclaimed horror author Stephen King. Sosie Bacon, a former Easttown mare, leads the film’s cast as Dr. Rose Cotter, a psychologist who begins to suffer from horrific visions and hallucinations after seeing one of her patients take his own life horribly, leading her to try to find the answers behind a terrifying mystery before it’s too late. In addition to Bacon, Smile’s cast includes Scream’s Kyle Gallner, The Boys’ Caitlin Stasey, The Boys’ Jessie T. Usher, Stranger Things’ Rob Morgan, Harold and Kumar’s former Kal Penn, Big Little Lies’ Robin Weigert and Judy Reyes’ Scrubs.
The development of Smile was first announced in mid-2020, with Parker Finn writing and directing the adaptation of his short film. Production wouldn’t officially start until late 2021, partly due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, with the film finally ready by the end of May. Paramount Pictures slowly built the anticipation for Smile with a mysterious marketing campaign that largely kept the plot under wraps and saw a variety of actors hired to make on-camera appearances at baseball games across the country, and now the movie is getting an impressive boost.
In the wake of the film making its Fantastic Fest debut, Stephen King took to Twitter to share his brilliant review of Smile. The acclaimed author described the new horror film as a “good and scary horror film,” while also emphasizing the central performance of Sosie Bacon. Check out King’s review below:
Smile gets top marks for trust in the horror genre
Given King’s large following in the genre, his brilliant review of Smile is sure to come as a major vote of confidence in the horror genre that will enter its expansive release. The final Smile trailer released earlier this week was also packed with initial reactions to the film, which largely celebrated its creepy premise, effective scary jumps, and generally creepy vibe. Early reviews for Smile coming out of the Fantastic Fest premiere proved equally favorable, with the horror film currently having an 81% critical approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with many comparing it favorably to artists from the caliber of It Follows and The Ring.
If consensus remains positive at the time of its release, it will be interesting to see how King’s positive reception and brilliant review impact the box office potential of the new horror film. With controversy-filled Don’t Worry Darling on its second weekend and this week’s only other big release, Billy Eichner’s LGBTQ + rom-com Bros, the film could enjoy a similar box office turnout to the prequel of X Pearl, who has already earned $ 6.6 million against her $ 1 million budget, as well as the $ 148 million grand prize of the Lights Out horror adaptation.
