Sarrebourg. The weight room of the dojo named in tribute to Georges Girard

The weight room of the new dojo is now called Salle Georges-Girard. It was inaugurated in the presence of relatives and elected officials. Georges Girard, known as John, was a figure in the world of martial arts and, beyond that, in local life.

Cindy Vasseur, president of the judo club, opened the first page of the guestbook dedicated to John. “On July 12, 2021, after long months spent between his bed and his armchair, dressed in his kimono, this great sportsman left the sports halls and tatamis for good at the age of 88 for an imaginary destination, beyond training and competitions, leaving in sadness his family and his many friends”, testified his son, Philippe Girard.

An outstanding player and a seasoned coach

Sarrebourgeois by birth, retired business executive, John practiced Greco-Roman wrestling in 1950 before getting involved in the newly created judo club. In 1955 and for three years, he did his military service in Algeria. He practiced judo there and became Algerian blue belt champion.
