Roko Prkacin, the young player of Basketball Girona who dreams of being like Petrovic

BarcelonaIt was a rainy day and therefore the Mirogoj cemetery in Zagreb did not have many visitors. Last November 1, Roko Prkacin, a new player for Basketball Girona, took advantage of the All Saints’ Day to visit the grave of Drazen Petrovic with Biserka, the legendary player’s mother who died in a traffic accident in 1993. In Croatia everyone dreams of becoming the new genius of Sibenik, but so far no one has come close.

Prkacin, one of Marc Gasol’s bets for the future in Girona, arrived at the Eurobasket as one of the most promising young players, but his participation with Croatia is not very impressive. Rather discreet: of the three matches of the combined team coached by Damir Mulaomerovic, he has played only one. But there is no rush because the talent of this 19-year-old power forward needs to be simmered. Trained in the lower ranks of KK Cibona, Prkacin made the first team for Croatian top-flight Zagreb in the 2018-19 season when he was just 15 years old. After a short transfer to KK Rudes returned to Cibona, where he has remained until this summer.

Prkacin went through the lower categories of the Croatian national team and made his debut with the full team the day after he turned 18. His precocity has placed him in the orbit of the principals scouts NBA Europeans. His height (2.07 meters) made his coaches doubt which position he should prioritize on the floor, but lately he has finished defining himself as a four modern, a pivot winger capable of influencing the game in very different ways.

An ankle injury that forced him into surgery slowed his progress during the 2021-22 season, but no one doubts his potential. One of the people who knows Roko Prkacin best is Jordi Plà, sports director of Basketball Girona. “Roko is a player with sensational talent and abilities, a player with enormous potential and who, despite his age, has already shown that he can compete at the highest level. We want to grow together”, he analysed. “I am very happy to have signed for Básquet Girona because of the great basketball culture and the good atmosphere there. I’ve heard great things about the city. We are sure to play good basketball and achieve good results this season. I am delighted to play in the ACB and hope for the best”, says Prkacin.

Aíto’s opinion, key

Prkacin’s representative is Matej Mamic, from the Altus Basket agency. “He’s got NBA talent,” he boasts. The presence of Aíto García Reneses in Girona is a guarantee for the progression of the Croatian. The Madrid coach had already noticed the player when he was the coach of Alba de Berlin and since then his name has always been underlined in the agenda. The credit of García Reneses with the players of the future is unlimited.

After a year marked by injuries and erasing his name from the draft, Roko still has two chances to enter the NBA. If you do not enroll in the summer of 2023, you will be automatically eligible in 2024. Son of Nikola Prkacin, a former Croatian player, the youngster aspires to have a good season in the Liga Endesa to boost a career that has generated many expectations.
